I read this book in one sitting. It takes place mid 20th century and is the story of a man after he is diagnosed with leprosy, then forcibly taken to Carville, the only place that held people with this disease. It is also the story of how individuals overcome severe limitations and sorrows. The characters are well developed and the plot engaging.

The Shelter of Darkness Marguerite Mooers 9780990444824 Books Reviews
Marguerite Mooers has great ability at character development and creates authentic dynamics between those characters. The story line is gripping and made me wish to know more about these characters' lives after the book was finished. I felt I knew the farm, the community and the home, such were the descriptions. Highly recommend this book.
The author has researched the then (early 20th century) touchy subject of leprosy well, and she does a smooth job of guiding "John" through the vicissitudes of small town America once his secret is out. She also kept the story from being linear by means of the alternating persons . . . make that alternating VOICES . . . which put us readers into the hearts and minds of the main characters. Each formed his or her own sub-plot, which Marguerite brought back into the conclusion.
All Five Stars
Mooers has the gift of pacing, building tension and bringing her characters not only to life but to feeling protective of them. We're rooting for them and distressed when things go wrong. Choosing a subject that is little understood, she teaches us to care through action and dialogue, not through telling us - much appreciated. Her ability to write in the several voices in the story is as satisfying and reading Alexander McCall Smith. I want a sequel. I'm also awaiting a sequel to Take My Hand and the adventures of detective Chris Bellini. Take the time to read her. You'll be so glad you did. Pat, Atlanta, GA.
The Shelter of Darkness by Marguerite Mooers
This is a very interesting story that was well researched. It follows the life of John, Cathy and Jenny. From confinement in the National Leprosarium in Carvile to New York. John and Cathy had leprosy and her daughter, Jenny, was being kept by a caregiver who neglected her. In 1945 Leprosy was a disease that was feared. No one wanted to be near anyone with leprosy and their relatives soon forgot them. Cathy and the baby died in childbirth.
Raising Jenny by himself, John carried on. They came upon Annie Conroy who was pregnant and fleeing her abusive husband. Annie was invited to live with them so she could deliver her baby in safety. Telling you anymore would ruin the book for you.
This was a book won on goodreads.

This is a riveting read that convincingly recreates a time and a period in American history that is often overlooked due to momentous international events during these times. The characters are well-drawn and the plot was skillfully developed. It never drags because of the way the author changes voices, freshening the perspective. I bought the book for my and it is a keeper! I recommend reading it even while busy, as it comes full-circle and presents a hopeful (though realistic) outlook on humanity without moralizing.
This is the third book by Marguerite Mooers that I have read and loved every one of them! Definitely a must read....
