Six short stories explore how love can heal, can hurt, can calm and comfort, or can twirl you around and set you dancing. If you've ever longed for romance, walked away from a troubled relationship, struggled with a parent or child, or laughed about a date gone wrong, you'll identify with these stories.
Here's a preview of each story
Story 1 Longing for Love
It's February. Valentine's month. Time for cupid and chocolate. But will Julia Armstrong ever find a love of her own?
Story 2 Something Special
A bridal shower confrontation between shy Brenda and her domineering mother, Adele, reveals how complicated love can be.
Story 3 Hilda's Secret
After thirty years of marriage, both full and empty, Hilda makes a decision that will change everything.
Story 4 The Door
Julie Stevens decides to visit her father but when she reaches his apartment door, she's not sure if she should knock or just walk in.
Story 5 Worst First
Miserable first dates are not the exclusive province of the young. My worst first took place when I was well into competent, confident middle age. And it took place in one of the most beautiful, romantic cities in America.
Story 6 Love's Echo
Pete Bishop's kids are college-bound. His wife just landed her first job. Is his precious family shattering or can his love hold them all together even as they pursue divergent paths?
Shades of Love stories from the heart eBook Sunny Lockwood
Love is the theme of this collection of six short stories by Sunny Lockwood -- romantic love in "Longing for Love"; married love in "Hilda's Secret" and "Love's Echo;" the love between a mother and daughter in "Something Special;" and, a father and daughter in "The Door." "The Worst First" is the author's love for a truly funny story.Sunny Lockwood imbues her beautifully crafted stories with empathy, tenderness, and humor. My two favorites are "Longing for Love" and "Something Special." "How is it they could attract a mate and I cannot," Julia Armstrong wonders as she watches "smarmy" people on a reality TV show. Risking online dating, she asks herself, "Am I playing the fool with these short, fluffy messages, thinking love can arrive through a laptop computer screen?" The surprise ending is filled with honesty and wit as genuine love stories often are.
From the opening sentence of "Something Special" -- "Brenda saw her mother smiling and laughing in the kitchen with the other mothers, and for a short, quick moment she hated her" to the later tender exchange between Brenda and her mother Adele, this portrait of a complex mother-daughter relationship is totally engaging.
Again, I liked "Longing for Love" and "Something Special" the most. I recommend you read all six stories in this delightful collection and select your favorites.

Shades of Love stories from the heart eBook Sunny Lockwood Reviews
I was delighted with the first and subsequent chapters. Not mushy with realistic settings.Nice balance between the romantic love expectations and modern sensibilities.
Sunny Lockwood's stories are sweet in the best sense-- with characters who cannot fail but win you over. The writing's easy, and the stories flow well to communicate small aspects of love, life and relationships. And at unexpected moments, these characters reveal surprising depths. My only complaint is that these stories could have been longer.
Shades of Love is a great title for six love stories that describe every aspect of love - a secure and settled marital love, the promise of a new beginning, to the story of love that never had a chance to happen. They will make you laugh and then make you ache. My favorites were The Worst First and Longing For Love. Six perfect stories about people I wanted to know more about.
Whether she's writing fiction or nonfiction, Sunny Lockwood cares deeply about the characters in her stories. She goes beyond the surface in the multifaceted stories in Shades of Love and explores the territory of the heart. As a reader you are in good hands with this sensitive, perceptive writer.
Sunny Lockwood is an accomplished journalist whose gift for detail and description carries over to her short story collection, SHADES OF LOVE, STORIES FROM THE HEART. Some of her tales are drawn from experience as with her perceptive "Worst First," while others are imaginative. The twist in "Longing for Love" was sweet but not all that surprising. "Hilda's Secret", a story of a long marriage and abrupt change, would have benefitted from greater exposition, especially of the husband's position. Similarly, "The Door" resolves rather quickly for a long-standing relationship problem.
This is an author moving from journalism to fiction, not always an easy transition. The larger structure of a novel would provide a broader expanse in which to explore and develop characters and storylines. I hope there is such a book in the works and would look forward to a good read.
There may have been a simpler time in the past when it comes to many things. A time where something was either black or white, not shades of grey. But alas, it is doubtful that this was ever the case for the subject matter of this book love.
In this book Sunny Lockwood presents to us six stories of individuals seeking or reexamining love. The characters of the stories are engaging and the author imbues them with considerable depth. Some of the characters are mired in relationships with contradictions and/or conflicts. Others are seeking that special someone who hasn't arrived. There are all shades of love here love for mates, for spouses, for parents, and for family. At times dramatic and at times funny, Sunny's book is an in depth exploration of this most exalted of emotions within the human condition.
In the story "Something Special" a daughter struggles to come to terms with the particular style of her mother's love towards her. In "Hilda's Secret" a woman holding a terrible secret reexamines her life and her marriage. "My Worst First" is an autobiographical account of a first date that goes terribly wrong, while "Longing for Love" is the story of a lonely woman who seeks to fulfill her right to be loved, but first has to deal with the handicap of her disability. In "The Door" a daughter and a father struggle to accept each other. My personal favorite is "Love's Echo" where a man staunchly opposes any intrusion of his past into his present.
The book is well written, has a functional table of contents, and a "Preview" section both at the beginning of the book and at the end of each story that presents a synopsis of the stories with a link to each one. If you want a short enjoyable romantic read that is not "black and white," then Shades of Love is the book for you.
